I have so many cookbooks - but Great Dixter is one of my favorite gardens and I couldn't resist buying this one. It is so beautifully photographed and the recipes and descriptions of the dishes are so lovely and normal. I have lots of specialty cookbooks where you can make nothing without a trip or two to a market for an ingredient you've never heard of. But the recipes here are simple, delicious and use ingredients you would have on hand, possibly growing in your garden. I'm a vegetarian, but I found many recipes in this book that I plan to try. And as an extra - the photographs of Great Dixter will definitely make you want to visit. And you should - it's a magical place.
I bought this even though I have sworn off buying cookbooks because I have so many - I read about it on Margaret Roach's blog, and I thought it sounded wonderful. And it is! Beautifully photographed, with very tempting recipes - I can't wait to try all the savory pies, like Tomato Tart, Leek and Stilton Tart, Spinach Pie, Beet Top and Feta Tart. The desserts look wonderful, too, especially the Rhubarb Tart and Pear Torte. For a fruit-and-vegetable gardener who likes to cook, this book is a treasure.
Beautifully created with a surprising number of recipes utilizing plums and beets - both of which I cannot get enough of - makes me very happy!
Honestly, the most fun thing about this book is the romantic, flat-sheened, slightly dark images of the Great Dixter kitchen garden. Clods of soil covered in frost never looked so gorgeous. But the recipes made from vegetables grown in the garden are also encouraging and practical. It's like Alice Waters for the rest of us (who don't garden in a California climate). In the Pacific Northwest I can literally grow all these veggies, and then cook these recipes. And they are delicious, too.
